In this video I talk about the difference between a regular ounce and a troy ounce. A regular ounce is also called an avoirdupois ounce and there are 16 ounces in a pound. A troy ounce has only 12 troy ounces in a troy pound. A regular ounce has 28.35 grams and a troy ounce has 31.1 grams. A troy ounce is about 10% heavier than a regular ounce. Regular ounces are used to weigh food and everyday things. Troy ounces are used to weigh precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. All precious metals should be bought and sold in troy ounces. Copper is not a precious metal and is weighed in regular ounces.
