Unemployment in India is a complex problem with numerous overlapping and intertwined causes; however, it is possible to identify several key causes. The controversial PLFS (Periodic Labour Force Survey) was released by the National Statistical Office just after the Lok Sabha elections concluded in late May this year. The report showed that the unemployment rate in the country had reached 6.1 per cent, the worst in 45 years. Though the report was for 2017-18, the numbers added to the gloom in the economy. The data also showed that the rural and urban unemployment rate had reached its peak in the same time period. At first, the government denied the report but released it later without any amendments.
