Unlike Acute Pancreatitis, which has been discussed as one of the General Surgery lectures for medical students, chronic pancreatitis is the severe Inflammation of the pancreas. It gets worse as time passes, instead of healing. Here the difference between the Diseases of Pancreas i.e. acute vs chronic pancreatitis is also made understandable. Etiologically, chronic pancreatitis can be a result of The Alcohols abuse, Systemic Autoimmune Diseases, or hereditary.
Medical students will also understand the pathophysiology of chronic pancreatitis that is quite a complex process. It explains how oxidative stress and toxic metabolite are involved in the progression of Pathogenesis. Also, the SAPE hypothesis is discussed.
Diagnosis is a crucial step for a disease to select an appropriate treatment option. So, for chronic pancreatitis diagnosis, the investigations include the serum amylase test and some Clinical Radiology techniques such as X-ray, CT, MRI, ERCP, and MRCP.
Once done with the investigations, medical treatment comes under consideration. Several measures are taken for treatment such as treating the underlying cause which includes the treatment of addiction to The Alcohols use, the nutritional measure includes micronutrient therapy. On the other hand, pharmacological measures are also taken.
Besides this, the conditions of chronic pancreatitis which are indicative of surgery are biliary or pancreatic stricture, Hemorrhage, duodenal stenosis, and pseudocysts along with some other conditions.
One of the surgical procedures discussed in this General Surgery lecture for medical students is the endoscopic pancreatic sphincterotomy which is used for various purposes. ERCP with extracorporeal Shock wave lithotripsy is another surgical technique through which main pancreatic duct stones are cleared. Similarly, pancreatojejunostomy and pancreatectomy are surgical treatment methods for chronic pancreatitis.
