Barge Filled With Diesel Sinks in Galapagos

Barge Filled With Diesel Sinks in Galapagos A barge carrying 600 gallons of diesel sank near San Cristobal Island, in the Galapagos, Sunday, December 23.

The incident occurred as workers attempted to load a container on a barge with the crane. Somehow both the crane and the container tipped, destabilizing the vessel.

Workers in the barge began to jump into the water to prevent from sinking with the ship.

Staff from the Galapagos National Park and the Ecuadorian Navy used containment barriers and hydrocarbon-absorbing cloth around the vessel to prevent the scattering of diesel.

Authorities are working to assess the potential direct impacts on the ecosystem. (AP)
