As many as 50 students, who were detained during protests at the Jamia Millia Islamia University against the contentious Citizenship Act in the national capital, were released in the early hours of Sunday. While 35 of them were released were the Kalkaji police station, the remaining 15 were released from New Friends Colony.
This is the second flare-up in the national capital after 27 people were detained following clashes with police during a protest against the law last Friday outside the campus, involving Jamia students and local residents.
Meanwhile, in Aligarh, hundreds of AMU students protesting against the amended Citizenship Act clashed with police on Sunday at a campus gate after which the university administration announced the closure of the institution till January 5. Sporadic incidences of violence were also seen in Patna and the internet has been shut down in towns like Saharanpur.
Also in focus is Jharkhand, where the election for 15 assembly seats in the fourth phase shall take place today.
A total of 221 candidates are in the race for the 15 assembly seats.
