John Bercow's Emotional Last Day as U.K. House of Commons Speaker

John Bercow's Emotional Last Day as U.K. House of Commons Speaker One of Britain's most flamboyant parliamentary figures - the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow - broke down in tears on Wednesday on his last day in office.

Bercow became emotional as he thanked his family for their "support, stoicism and fortitude" over the last decade.

Lawmakers lined up to pay tribute to the Speaker as he presided over his last session of Prime Minister's Questions.

Prime minister Boris Johnson offered him a series of sometimes back-handed compliments, saying he had been a "great servant" of the House.

Opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said Bercow had given real power to backbenchers.

Pro-Brexit lawmakers such as Johnson have long felt that Bercow has favoured Remain lawmakers during debates.
