*Fire update & scenario: The fire started northeast of Geyserville in The Geysers on October 23, 2019 & has since burned 76,800+ acres & was 30% contained. Fanned by wind gusts of 60-80 mph, the Kincade Fire had exploded in size & prompted evacuations early Thursday morning. Several smaller fires also popped up both in Northern & Southern California. The forecasted strong winds were to raise the danger of rapidly spreading wildfires over the weekend. Red flag warnings were issued for parts of the Bay Area & much of NorCal thru Monday morning. Wind gusts of 35-65 mph were expected, with locally higher gusts possible over the highest peaks... The fire threatened over 90,000 structures & had caused widespread evacuations throughout Sonoma County, including the communities of Geyserville, Healdsburg & Windsor. The majority of Sonoma County & parts of Lake County were under evacuation warnings. This fire is the largest of the 2019 California wildfire season...
*Weather update: Critical fire weather conditions were in place especially in portions of the North Bay this day due to the strong, dry winds. What caused this wind event? A strong offshore wind event had shaped up as a sharp dip in the jet stream, quite strong for late October, came thru the Rockies & the Great Basin. Just to our west, a strong high pressure was over the Pacific. Between these two, this perfect setup had caused the gusty northerly winds this day across the area.
