An allergic response occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks any harmless substances in an attempt to protect the body from it. The chemical substances released from this immune reaction results in runny nose, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, and skin reactions. In some people, the same reactions affect the lungs and airways which results in asthma symptoms.
