What is a Shank? - (Boot Shank) - Why do boots need a shank?

A shank is a structural part of a boot (not to be confused with a prison shiv or the golfing term) and many boots have a shank including the Timberland boots we recently reviewed. Some boots do not have a shank like the dr. Martens that we also reviewed recently. In this video I talk about why boots need a shank and why boots might not need a shank and what a shank is.
