Rising from a consultative meeting in Lagos on Saturday, the group gave its nod to the new initiative, and expressed the readiness of its members to drive it and ensure the safety and security of the Southwest region.
The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, who is also the convener of the group, said efforts to curb the security challenges in the region has been yielding positive results, saying that since the inception of the group in July 2019, there have been significant efforts to reduce the spate of insecurity in the southwest. He, however, said the group has not been contacted by the Governors on the details of the operation especially, the recruitment of personnel for the outfit, with just five days to the commencement of the operation.
Governors in the Southwest had last week announced that the task force will commence operations on Thursday January 9, 2020.
According to them, the security taskforce will create the needed synergy between the states in order to ensure the safety and security of the region.
The groups to be deployed for the initiative include the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, VGN, the Southwest Hunters Association, SWHAN, the Agbekoyas, Southwest Agbekoya Group SAG, Agbekoya Farmers Society Group, and Yoruba Youth Council, YYC, among others.
Gani Adams lamented the general security situation in the country especially the attacks on the Tawari community in Kogi State where nineteen lives were lost and property including worship centres and traditional palace were burnt down on Thursday night.
