He was always smiling. He had a massive persona.  “Derek was the star of Most Haunted. Whenever we turned up to a venue, there would be fans waiting to speak to him.  “He made that series. He was an integral part of it.  “And he was very professional to work with and he was so charismatic. But he was also so down to earth. He was never pompous. He loved chatting to people.”  Fellow medium Micky Vermooch, 66, said: “Derek doted on his family. Him and his wife were devoted to each other. I know for a fact it won’t be long before he makes himself known.  “He will find someone he wants to make contact with to say, ‘Derek has arrived in the spirit world’. I don’t think it’ll be too long until that happens. He will want them to know he’s safe.  “In terms of coming back from the spirit world, I would say he has a head-start – his faith is everything.”  Micky, Derek’s pal for 20 years, added: “We used to share a lot of banter. He was always the perfect gentleman.”  After news of Derek’s death broke yesterday, scores of fans rushed to pay tribute to him online.  He became Britain’s most famous psychic. But his career was dogged with accusations that he was a charlatan.  He caused outrage in 2012 when he claimed missing Madeleine McCann was “in the spirit world”.  In 2009, he was slammed for a live seance TV show he took part in where he claimed to have been contacted by dead pop star Michael Jackson.  Derek left haunting messages and revealed he had been suffering from flu just hours before he died on Friday.  Taking to social media channels at the end of the week, he wrote: “It’s Friday! Life is too short to start your day with broken pieces of yesterday, it will definitely destroy your wonderful today and ruin your great tomorrow.”  Just a year ago he said he was looking forward to passing into the spirit world.  He gave an interview to Celebrity Radio where he told host Alex Belfield: “Death is a transition. It’s letting go of a way of life in the physical to go and see a broader scope of what is the intention for all us human beings.  “Life is continuous, but in a different way. We are eternal. We can never be snuffed out. I know I will join my mum and dad and all my relatives. It is just a matter of time.”  Wife Gwen yesterday told of her grie
