Kerala's famous Chinese Fishing Nets are the site for a popular sympathy scam that's taking advantage of foreigners. The fishermen pretend to be friendly locals and invite you onto their fishing nets, only to ask you for a donation! This is precisely why a lot of foreigners are worried about meeting Indians on the street in India. They've had too many bad experiences with scammers who they thought were friendly locals. Scammers in India see foreigners as walking ATMs that they can manipulate into giving a lot of money.

In some cases of this fishing net scam, the fisherman will take your photo and then not give your camera back until you pay them enough money. Many foreigners have been caught up by this scam.
