WINNER E4 award 2019 Habitat change often generates extinctions that take a certain time to be complete. These constitute an extinction debt. However, contrary to most debts, one would rather not pay this one. We summarized the current state of extinction debts all over the globe, and the ecological processes that generate these debts. Based on this summary, we proposed how future research can potentially help to waive debts without paying the price of extinctions. Keywords: Anthropocene, extinction dynamics, biodiversity loss, habitat destruction, climate change, time lag, species interactions, genetic erosion, ecosystem stability, ecological modeling
