MOIST BOY - Deep Rest

MOIST BOY - Deep Rest Yes, this band is called Moist Boy. Yes, they do call themselves that -- willingly, no less. I'm glad we've got that established.

Part of me wishes that Moist Boy named themselves after something, um... not nearly as "problematic". Because, you know; it's kinda hard to bring up in casual conversation, "hey, have you ever heard of 'MOIST BOY'? Yeah, 'MOIST BOY' is so great. I'm a *huge* fan of 'MOIST BOY'". Because... well, I most definitely am. I wrote about their debut self-titled EP back in March of 2017 ( and I'm very, very pleased to see that my years-old writings on Moist Boy are just as pertinent as ever -- more so, I'd say. "Deep Rest" is the group's third serving since the embryonic musical union found in their first cassette, in which the band's proclivity for darkened, yet-cloyingly-sweet pop-punk melodies are showcased under a burlish, scuzzed-out garage rock pretense. Going back to re-listen to that album after processing their tonal developments in "Deep Rest", the whole thing seems awfully... prophetic. It grants me a newfound appreciation for Moist Boy's progeny of grief-fueled escapism, projected through the lens of an unrelenting power-chord assaults that never fails to enliven once-deadened senses with their energized, supercharged progressions. It channels a youthful disillusionment that my heart intrinsically yearns for, something that shamelessly relishes in an adolescent-grade nihilistic brood, utilizing upbeat, melodic overtones to gestate in a bleakened undercurrent of puerile angst -- and Moist Boy does it so damn well. With its tight vocal harmonies, poppy, tightly-composed rock 'n' roll romps, and a comprehensiveness propulsiveness to their musicianship -- with even the chords, ascending with a percussive forcefulness, rivaling the drummer's high-tempo snarebeats in terms of punch and vigor --, "Deep Rest" just feels... comfortably familiar. "Welcome", even. It brings me back to being a fourteen-year-old boy stomping around joylessly to Green Day's "Insomniac", telling myself that that "these feelings I'm feeling are as real as real gets" and that "no, it's not a phase mom". Well. Cheers, fourteen-year-old-me. You were right, and now you've fucked yourself up for life. I'll gladly stomp around -- joylessly, of course -- to Moist Boy's "Deep Rest" any day of the week. These feelings I'm feeling are as real as real gets. I wanna be sick.

Tapes are available for purchase at the bandcamp link below. Each tape comes with a complementary moist towelette. That's good synergy. Here's a silly music video for "I Wanna Be Sick", for visual accompaniment:
