EMPOWER BANK Checking Account|Debit Card REVIEW - December 2019 [NO MORE CASH BACK!]

Initially this was going to be a positive review of Empower.me, a relatively new checking account service, completely online that’s geared toward millennials. However, I reviewed the fine print and can no longer recommend this card and checking account.

It used to offer 1% cash back on up to $1,000 spent, every month, along with a generous savings account APY and offered pretty lucrative referral bonuses. However, despite the high APY for both the savings and checking account, the newly introduced maintenance fee of $6 completely eats away at any interest that is earned in this account, putting it into the same league as Acorns and Stash.
