What is infidelity? Why do people cheat? Why do people seek comfort in another person? There are numerous questions related to the topic of infidelity.
Our host Meeta Gutgutia discusses this in detail with Dr Nisha Khanna, psychologist. Experiencing the act of cheating is one of the most horrid events in somebody’s life. Dr Nisha explains infidelity as having an affair with another person when you are already in a committed relationship.
She categorises infidelity in the following categories. These categories help define the reasons why someone would stray from their marriage and find comfort with another person.
Romantic Infidelity – when a person genuinely feels love and affection for another person while in a marriage.
Mental Infidelity – this type of cheating involves a person investing their emotional energy, time and attention into someone other than their partner. This is mainly non-sexual.
Physical Infidelity – when a person is sexually involved with a person outside their committed relationship.
Virtual infidelity – talking to someone via texts or online messaging is also a form of cheating. If you are exerting your time, attention and love on someone other than your partner – then you’re cheating.
Lack of understanding, lack of communication and emotional instability are the major reasons leading to adultery. A healthy relationship requires trust, understanding, respect and time. Does your relationship consist of these essential elements?
