In December 1838 Chopin writes from Palma de Mallorca to his friend J. Fontana who has now concluded Op.28 but we know that some Preludes had taken them with him from Paris: the daring return on a cattle car to avoid contagion says a lot about the sufferings that Chopin had to suffer, already sick and hopeless after the attempt to cure the Convent of Valdemossa. The two-part fugue recorded here after a selection of Preludes (deliberately without Fugues) goes back to the conservatory studies and reveals a profound knowledge of compound counterpoint with great singing.
