Symptom started with clicking of steering when turning lock to lock, eventually expanding to clunking full range and finally snapping. You will also see messages about "Chassis Instability" when the clunking gets bad. This is actually a known issue with BMW on the F2X and F3X cars, especially the RWD ones. The bolts used on the steering rack motor has snapped. Issue is resolved by replacing the whole steering rack. Corresponding Service Bulletin is 00 32 59 02 00.
