Why too many young Australians are struggling with literacy in the digital age | Four Corners In this program, Four Corners investigates the state of literacy in Australian schools.

Recent NAPLAN results and international benchmarks indicate some Australian children are slipping well behind where they should be in the key area of literacy.

We examine the way reading and writing is being taught in our schools to find out what is going wrong.

We’ve spoken to teachers who tell us they’re seeing children struggle with the study of English well beyond the first year of school. Some teachers worry part of the problem lies with the way they themselves have been taught.

Teachers and students are also grappling with a growing problem – digital distraction. Today’s school children are the first generation of “digi kids” raised with digital devices from their earliest years – as one teacher told us, “they’re the kids that were handed an iPad when they were making noise as a young child”.

In the program we investigate the concerns about the impact of these digital devices and how they affect reading and writing skills – not just when kids are first learning, but as they progress through primary school and into the secondary years.

The challenge facing educators is how to fix the problem.

In this program, we’ll meet some inspiring kids, some committed teachers and reveal how schools are using different methods to catch students before they fall through the cracks.
