HK health workers protest use of police force

HK health workers protest use of police force (26 Oct 2019) Medical workers gathered in Chater Garden on Saturday night to rally against what they call "violent repression" by police in response to ongoing protests in Hong Kong.

Volunteer first-aid workers have treated protesters' wounds, including broken bones, and tapped into underground networks of doctors and other health professionals to help with treatment.

Medical worker Doris Chan said she came to Saturday's rally to show support for her colleagues.

Rally participant Tom Leung said he joined the rally after he saw ambulance workers being blocked by police from entering a railway station to help injured people.

Demonstrations in Hong Kong erupted in June over an extradition bill and have since snowballed into wider calls for full democracy and an inquiry into alleged police brutality.

Police have responded to the months-long swarm of heavy protests with tear gas, pepper spray, live rounds and water cannons.

Earlier in October a teenage student was shot at point-blank range by a police officer during a standoff between protesters and authorities.
