GRACE KOTZE : in the studio with the artist

GRACE KOTZE : in the studio with the artist StateoftheART is thrilled to go behind the scenes with Durban artist Grace Kotze and bring you this insight into her life and creative process.

Grace is fascinated with the manner in which the natural world creeps into our homes and urban surrounds. Flora and fauna persist in the most uninhabitable looking places and wild animals live alongside us in the city – just like the troop of monkeys Grace introduces us to in her nearby park. Nature’s presence is further enforced in our visual lives through its persistent presence in advertising, design, fine art, music and fashion.

These elements inspire her paintings and her process involves paying attention to her authentic emotional environment so the paintings are able to convey an emotional state. People, landscapes, foliage, cityscapes and still life objects may all seem everyday subjects but they feel anything but when she moulds them into artworks. Paint and emotions have a manner of transporting the mundane into a visually intriguing and compelling subject that holds our attention.

'WONDERLAND' is Grace Kotze's upcoming solo exhibition at StateoftheART Gallery, on show between 7 - 23 November 2019.
