The Significance of Muharram

The Significance of Muharram Muharram marks one of the most significant events in Islamic history – the Hijrah (migration) of Muslims from Mecca to Medina.

The Islamic Hijri calendar was adopted during the Khilafah of Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) after a contractual dispute between two men highlighted the need to establish a calendar for the Muslims.

The date of the Hijrah was selected to be the start of the Islamic calendar. This date was chosen ahead of the date of our Noble Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) birth, the date of his death and from the date he received the first revelation.

Why? Because the Sahabah understood the importance of the Hijrah in establishing Islam as a system. It was a hijrah from falsehood to the Truth, from Batil to Haqq, and from Kufr to Islam.
