The discourse on national security has undergone a subtle change with 20th century thinking no longer enough to cope with the challenges presented to militaries and nations in the 21st century. In his keynote address at the Colombo Defence Seminar, SNI Editor-in-Chief Nitin Gokhale argues that today the role of militaries has widened from matching force levels with neighbours to dealing with regional conflicts; non-state actors emerging from ‘failed states’ or terrorist networks; cyber-attacks; and attacks on space assets. Such challenges, he argues, need to be dealt with swiftly as in the internet age information, or misinformation, is something that can no longer be controlled or contained. Thus, not only do militaries have to adopt a more multi-dimensional role, they must also be made aware that today’s wars have no start or end date, and their role may be required long after the conflict has ended. #india #Srilanka #Defence
