Word Problems with a Purpose

Word Problems with a Purpose I'm excited to let you know about a new project I just completed for elementary math teachers. It's called "Word Problems with a Purpose," and it features ten math worksheets that address the Common Core Math Standards and focus on essential place value concepts, such as comparing, ordering, rounding, estimation, addition, and subtraction.

The word problems our students solve during math time often relate to such items as cookies and pizza slices. As teachers, we can make better use of this valuable educational “real estate” by having these problems serve as a platform that introduces children to the wonderful work that many non-profit organizations are doing to address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s).

Each sheet introduces a new non-profit organization, includes its mission and website, and contains problems that help children learn more about the vital work of these groups. The problems are appropriate for children in grades 3-5.

This resource:
*Can be used for either classwork or homework
*Contains an answer key
*Comes with an additional copy of each worksheet with blanks instead of numbers so that you can plug in any values you wish. That way, if you would like to increase or decrease the difficulty level of these problems for some or all of your students, you can choose other numbers that are more appropriate.
*Describes options for further differentiation that support a CGI approach to math instruction
*Includes suggestions for classroom implementation and parent communication
