The Department of Legal Metrology is established under the Ministry of Consumer Protection and Weights & Measures. This is the objective and liability of the department to ensure accuracy of weighing & measuring instruments, which are used in commercial transactions & protection, in the hierarchy of standards established by the Central Government as per provisions of the Legal Metrology Act by verifying, stamping and Providing calibration certificate to them at prescribed periodical intervals. In addition to this, another important liability of the department is to regulate and control the trade in pre-packaged commodities by ensuring that such packages conform to the declarations, as well as net quantity contained therein.

उत्तर प्रदेश मे ‘उपभोक्ता संरक्षण एवं बाट तथा माप’ मंत्रालय के अधीन विधिक माप विज्ञान विभाग स्थापित है। केन्द्र सरकार द्वारा स्थापित मानकों का अनुकरण करते हुये ‘विधिक माप विज्ञान अधिनियम, 2009’ के प्राविधानो के अधीन ‘व्यापारिक संव्यवहार’ एवं ’संरक्षण’ मे प्रयोग किये जाने वाले माप-तौल उपकरणो का नियमित समयान्तराल पर परीक्षण एवं मुद्रांकन करते हुये उनकी यथार्थता सुनिश्चित करना विभाग का मुख्य उद्धेश्य एवं दायित्व है। साथ ही, डिबा-बंद वस्तुओं पर विधिनिर्दिष्ट वैधानिक घोषणाओं के साथ-साथ पैकेज मे अन्तर्विष्ट वस्तु की शुद्ध मात्रा सुनिश्चित कराने के लिये विधि के अधीन व्यापार को नियंत्रित करना भी विभाग का एक महत्वपूर्ण दायित्व है।
