“Midsommar” follows a young couple Dani (Florence Pugh) and Christian (Jack Reynor) and their friends Mark, Josh, and Pelle (Will Poulter, William Jackson Harper, Vilhelm Blomgren) as they travel to an isolated Swedish village for a special festival that only occurs every 90 days. When the cultural festivities take a dark turn, the group’s visit to Sweden devolves into a nightmare in broad daylight — and the frays in Dani and Christian’s relationship soon become all too evident. “Midsommar” marks the sophomore effort from Ari Aster, the mastermind behind 2018’s “Hereditary.” Much like “Hereditary,” which was Aster’s first-ever feature, “Midsommar” features mysterious symbolism, unsettling imagery, and a very confusing ending.
So what does it all mean? We analyze the references and inspirations behind “Midsommar” and dissect the possible political message behind the movie’s ending. We explain which ceremonies in the film are pure cultish nightmare — and which ones are based in the real-life Scandinavian traditions around Midsummer. And finally, we tie it all together: the bear, the suspicious meals, Norse folklore, Viking rituals, Nordic runes, and how the drawings on the walls predict some of the film’s most bizarre scenes — and its most gruesome murders.
