How they restore 169 YEAR OLD Railway Bridge

How they restore 169 YEAR OLD Railway Bridge If you remember not so long ago I followed the story of a Bridge in St Annes - Highbury Road bridge, an aging structure that was in need of a face lift. It was interesting to witness and learn how the whole process evolves and why it’s important to look after our furniture of the railways properly.

Not only will cars or trains travel over bridges or viaducts but people also need a safe passage to cross the lines. 1000’s of foot bridges serve this country some replaced or where possible structures are refurbished.

Especially something that has great value to the people and area it serves. Network Rail recognise it’s very important to the identity of a location to keep something preserved and maintain its purpose. To most people, it’s just a bridge but it’s deeper than that. It’s part of the landscape and there is a passion to keep things alive not just from a communities point of view but from those who are responsible for such beautiful icons.

Millom Railway Station Footbridge usually lives across the platforms in Cumbria along the Cambrian Coast Line about 16 miles north of Barrow-in-Furness. The station is managed by Northern who provide all passenger train services.

Like the footbridge I’m going to see today, it complements the station it strides across. Millom Station was opened by the Whitehaven & Furness Junction Railway in 1850.

There was also a short goods-only branch line to the iron works at Hodbarrow until 1968. This line was abandoned after the works closed but the disused track bed can still be seen from passing trains, whilst the old works site is now a lovely nature reserve.

The station buildings are now Millom Heritage Museum And Visitor Centre with a small workshop offering furniture restoration.

This is another fine example part of the Great North Rail Project’s operations to keep not only the tracks in tip top shape, but the infrastructure also.

The footbridge span was removed and transported 100 miles south to be restored here in Heywood near Manchester so it’s the Taziker factory and I’m visiting at their workshop to see the progress of repairs for Millom station’s footbridge span.
