The storm system that spawned deadly tornadoes in the Midwest, triggering up to 52 twisters Monday across eight states, is threatening to bring severe weather to the tri-state area Tuesday, and Storm Team 4 says the risk has increased over the last few hours. Most of New Jersey is in the "more likely" zone for severe weather later Tuesday, and the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center issued a tornado warning for Pike County, Pennsylvania, until 7:15 p.m. Officials confirmed a large and dangerous tornado was spotted approaching Scranton.
Tornado watches were issued for Hunterdon and Warren counties in New Jersey until 10 p.m.
A tornado watch is issued when weather conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms that are capable of producing tornadoes. A warning is issued when radar indicates conditions that would make a tornado likely, or one has been spotted, according to the National Weather Service.
New York City is just outside the ominous dark red zone but close enough that any slight changes could have severe effects, according to Storm Team 4. Potential impacts include damaging wind and hail, flash flooding and tornadoes, among other hazards like torrential rain and frequent lightning.
