UK Prime Minister Theresa May resigns

May's announcement that she will resign on June 7 puts an end to months of speculation over her future because of her handling of Brexit.

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday announced her resignation, putting an end to months of speculation over her future because of her handling of Brexit.

"It is now clear to me that it is in the best interests of the country to have a new prime minister," May told reporters.

She said she will be resigning as leader of the Conservative Party on June 7. She will remain as prime minister until a new leader is elected from within the party.
