AU meets 22-country threshold to implement AfCFTA The AU has announced it has received two ratification from Sierra Leone and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.Through this, the union meets the threshold for the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement. It aims to create a single continental market for goods and services with free movement of business persons and investments. It will also boost establishment of the Continental Customs Union and the African Customs Union. The deal is expected to create a market for over one billion people with a GDP of approximately $2.6T. Countries that have ratified the agreement include Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda and South Africa. We were joined by Anzetse Were is a Kenyan economist who specializes in trade issues.
